Gender roles in Modern Family

Traditional education creates, in time, an incomplete image on family’s gender roles. From generation to generation children interiorize theirs parent’s model known as “separated world’s myth”- a wife and a mother only cooking , doing laundry and taking care of the child “contrasting” with a husband and a father working or fixing different things. According to this mentality each partner has established responsibilities in private and public life that other one couldn’t take over.
Changing traditional gender roles seems to be difficult not because woman or man don’t have the necessary skills for other one’s tasks but because every one carries on a symbol of his “world”. Society’s evolution especially on woman valorization redefines gender roles promoting a woman more active, ambitious and independent and a man more emotional ad involved in household tasks.
Women of our days have more liberty to choose between the “family model”- these ones are being more obedient and anchored in tradition (the feminine type), the “feminist model”- who’s priority is the career (the anti-feminine type) or the middle model adopted by the “double career” type of woman- profession and family. On the base of any of these choices are variables like social-status, race, education level, culture’s values etc.
We are assisting to a reprioritization of woman needs and so professional success became more interesting and even attractive than family one probably because it brings something new. Women are motivated to choose the career by elements as the wish for financial independency, the need to prove her capacities, to open and better integrate in modern society and the possibility to control and not being only controlled. All this reasons offer her a psychological equilibrium.
Most of the men consider women’s career as a conflict source having arguments like: women will neglect theirs family attributions, the imminent change of man’s authority, his incertitude concerning the professional competition and the risk to deteriorate the marital relation. Even at first side man and children are felling the stress generated by the new status of woman, she’s living an interior conflict as well. Woman need to
understand her need for self-accomplishment but the remains of traditional mentality still affect her modern vision.
So our children should make a difference on gender roles perspective but we are in a vicious circle because every family is raising their kids for a passed time, influenced by their own mentality and resistance to change. The main idea is that both women and men should consider this role’s exchange like a challenge and also accept that a man as well as a woman can do anything with willing. – Psychologist, Nicoleta Cramaruc

  1. In your own words, do you believe this is a fair accusation of the modern family? Why or Why not?

  2. I myself do believe that this is not only a fair accusation but a right accusation. This accusation should be shared with the whole world. People today in the modern world don't see or accept the fact that both women and men have the right and can do whatever their will desires. I myself believe in the "double career" type of a women. I think it's only fair that a woman has the right to not only be able and allowed to take care and provide for her family but also as well be able to follow and pursue her choice of a career. In some cases the man in the relationship is sometimes currently not able or simply not providing for his family, which urges the woman in the relationship to stand tall and provide for her own family. It is true in my religion that man is the leader and the provider of the household, but we are all human beings under the same sun and its only right to be able to do what one pleases in their god given life.

  3. No, it's not fair. Women or Men shouldnt be put to a certain accusation of what he/she should be doing for their families. Women can carry as much of a responsibilty as men and vice versa. Over the years, The US for example has overcome the stereotype of gender in the work place while in other places around the world havent. Men also have their own responsibility for their family such as the "head" or "leader" of the household but numerous men arent able to do this for their families. I know it's not right, but all humans should be held to a standard no matter how high it is, we all should go for the same prize.

  4. I personally do not compleatly agree with this accusation because it says that women of our days have two chioces, to be the "steriotypical wife" cooking, cleaning, doing laundry, or they can have a career. This however is not true, a woman can do as she pleases being whatever she wants, she doesn't have to be the "steriotypical wife" or the woman with the job, a woman can have a job and take care of her family. However if this generation does change and women start to be more of the career type of people, amybe it could be a good thing and guys will stop thinking that a woman is only good for cooking and cleaning.

  5. I myself accept this accusation because it is the one that most people accept in our society. women used to recognized as the cooking, cleaning, the “family model” but now because of women’s rights movements and other feminist groups they have worked their way out of that sickening hole of this “separated world's myth” and into the modern society were they can do the same stuff we do and even better. Though progress has been made there is still the fact that they are undermined and still get paid less than men. For the most part I believe that women can do the same tasks as men if not better and vies versa with men.

This is a well put argument.
I believe that women can do the same tasks as men and men can do the same tasks as women. This is why it's called "seperated world myths". Myth. Myth. Myth. Yes, women used to be recognized as the ones who do the house cleaning, etc, but that is because women were not allowed to show what they are really made of in terms of outside work that men do. After that problem was solved, more and more women and men began working together, and now as raising children also. In my opinion, i think women and men were meant to work together. Yes, most men are strong and more cabable, but thats what "together" is there for.

This accusation towards women in the modern family is true and false simultaneously. The accusation is true about stereotypes. The stereotype of a woman is to be a wife and a mother who cooks and cleans while the father is the only member of the household who has a career. People in society still believe in these gender roles which I believe is unfair. A woman can do anything a man can, yet they are treated differently. When women are attempting to liberate from their stereotype and obtain a career, people believe that the women will neglect her other duties as a wife and a mother. That is false. If woman is able to achieve a career and is successful does not mean she will forget her other responsibilities. Society believes a woman getting a job will lead to conflict in the marital relationship due to the professional competition. I do not believe that at all. I personally think that the husband and wife will gain more respect for each other by both of them contributing to the family income. Women should have the right to feel accomplished and established.

I myself personally don't agree with this accusation of the modern family. Men and Women are already facing this "challenge" of changing their roles. In this argument, women are seemed to only be able to the do the extremes of certain things, but can never come to a common ground, even though there is one. My family is a personal example of how this accusation is false. My mom works part-time and still comes back home Tuesday-Thursday and spends time cooking and spending time with the family. This same role switch is applied to my dad as well, showing that these role changes are already occurring in modern families.

I do not agree with the accusation that people in families have roles for each person. I do not think that men should be known as the ones who build and repair things and the ones who make the money and the women are known as the people who cook and clean. Women should be able to pick and choose what career they want to do. Many women today are able to do what men can do and probably even more. I guess you can say that this happens a little in my family. My dad goes to work while my mom stays at home. The only reason that she stays at home is because she has to take us to school and when she is not taking us to places, she cooks and cleans. My mom doesn't stay at home because that is her role in the family. She does it because she wants to.

  10. I do not agree with this because it says that women now days have to be the stereotypical wife that dose the cooking, cleaning, and laundry. There other choice is that they can have a career. But this is not true women can clean if she wants to and have a career if she wants to, she does not have to be the normal wife. Women can do anything they want. They can have a jobs that mostly men do or stay at home.

I do not think this can accurately describe fully the modern family. There are some cases where families are still like this and women don't have a choice, but there are also many families that are just the reverse. Saying that women have only choices; to either be that stereotypical woman, or have a career is something I strongly disagree with. There are many people I know who are both, and you can't stereotype them either way. At past times this might have been a better representation of families but today this is not.
